First Step into Professional Diving

Some time ago, I was invited by Boby to join him in his new dive shop as a dive master..

I've thought about becoming a DM when I first picked up diving with Orepheus Dive, and I thought that some day I'll go back to Orpheus and be a DM cuz it's a place with really great and professional instructors that are really fun too!

I thought long and hard about becoming a DM again after taking my rescue course in Aug. The rescue course really changed my whole perspective towards diving and how i look at other divers! But that's another post! hahah.. Back to the story..

Diving, like any other sport, has its risks and dangers; as long as you follow safe diving practices, the risks are actually very low, but never ZERO. That is the risk that all divers choose to accept. I do. Having said that, diving is also a sport whereby a bad decision can go really bad. I did a honest review of myself and my diving skills after the rescue course. Do I have what it takes to be a Divemaster? Do I have the strength to carry the responsibility of other's lives on my shoulders? Am I skilled enough to handle the emergencies that come up underwater? So on and so on..

Nothing ever comes out of just thinking and not doing. I know I can dive. I know I am capable of responding to diving emergencies. Here's an opportunity right in front of me. I can choose to pass it, take my time and slowly decide, or I can have a bit of faith in myself, and embrace the opportunity that was presented to me. I chose the later, but i kept the decision to myself.

That was until I joined Sg Scuba in their first Intro to Scuba Diving. Interacting with the students, demonstrating skills to them, coaching them to do the skills and all those brought me back to the day when i started to learn diving. Looking at their happy faces and expression of amazement of trying something for the first time. That's when the meaning of diving all came back to me.

While taking care of other divers are also part of being a DM, the bigger picture about Diving is going to amazing places, meeting wonderful people, and doing things that we all love! I want to share this passion with others!

I cast my decision in stone and answered to Boby's invite. That's how i decided to become a DiveMaster. =)
